SFI Implementation Committees
(SICs) perform local outreach and education activities that
promote sustainable forestry, the SFI program, and SFI
Standard compliance. As of 2001, British Columbia and Alberta
companies with an interest in SFI have formed the Western
Canadian Sustainable Forestry Initiative Implementation
Committee (WCSIC).

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program is a
comprehensive system of principles, objectives and
performance measures developed by professional foresters,
conservationists and scientists, among others that combines
the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the
long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil and water
quality. The SFI Standard spells out the requirements of
compliance with the program. The SFIS is based on nine
principles that address economic, environmental, cultural and
legal issues, in addition to a commitment to continuously
improve sustainable forest management.
SFI program participants provide leadership and invite a wide
range of stakeholders to contribute — private
landowners, independent loggers, consultants, government land
managers, legislators, university scientists, and
conservationists. These resource professionals volunteer a
significant amount of time to assure that national SFI
program objectives are consistently implemented and adapted
to region-specific needs. Forestry associations often sponsor
SICs, which have been formally established in 38 states and 4
Canadian provinces. Key activities focus on education &
training, quality control, communications, and reporting.
